Value Beyond Cash

What Pennsylvania businesses bring to the table

Trades, family restaurants, auto shops and Main Street storefronts keep the region running, and each carries value beyond cash.

Roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical and remodeling.

Example: open dates between larger projects.

Restaurants & Pizza Shops

Dining certificates, catering and party trays.

Example: transferable certificates for a neighborhood favorite.

Automotive

Repairs, tires, oil changes and detailing.

Example: detailing certificates for slower weekdays.

Main Street Retail

Selected inventory and store certificates.

Example: seasonal merchandise or gift certificates.

Event Venues & Hospitality

Hotel rooms, banquet space and catering.

Example: weeknight room nights or open venue dates.

Community Recognition

A local auto shop, recognized at a community event

Here's one way trade value can create recognition for a Pennsylvania business.

Accepted trade value may sometimes support community promotions, social-media giveaways, approved fundraising and local business recognition.

  1. A Westmoreland County auto shop provides detailing certificates through an approved arrangement.
  2. A certificate is offered as a prize at an approved community fundraiser, where permitted.
  3. The shop is recognized by name as the business that provided the prize.

An illustration only. Not every arrangement includes promotional use, and promotional results are not guaranteed.

Straight Answers

Questions we hear

Is Bread or Barter only for Pittsburgh businesses?

No. Our Pennsylvania work centers on Pittsburgh and the surrounding counties, but businesses elsewhere in the state are welcome to apply.

What kinds of Pennsylvania businesses apply?

Contractors, restaurants, automotive shops, retailers, venues, hotels and professional services: any business with products, services or available capacity to offer.

My customers come from West Virginia and Ohio too. Can I apply?

Yes. Many Southwestern Pennsylvania businesses serve customers across state lines. Tell us about your business and where your customers come from.

How is barter handled for taxes?

Barter is generally taxable at fair market value, just like a cash sale. Businesses remain responsible for their own tax and accounting obligations, and Bread or Barter may provide required reporting information where applicable.
